Herring Cove Beach is Provincetown's most popular. And for good reason: it's huge, it's a comfortable walk or bike ride from town, and its mingling of warm bay and cold ocean waters makes for one of the more satisfying swimming temperatures on the Outer Cape. But all the beauty isn't out along the shore. Behind the low dunes to the rear lies a vast marsh that is almost dry at low tide and that provides a giant, even more temperate swimming "pool" than the beach at high tide. In between those extreme tides - as in this painting - it offers a multi-hued palette of sand, grass and water in the foreground, and the simple beauty of Woods End light standing on the distant dunes. It's truly a classic Cape Cod scene.
